When the world stopped spinning and his vision cleared, Omega found himself on his back, chest deep in a pile of rubble, facing a large building with an oddly human-shaped hole in it. he groaned, then tried to stand up. He managed to raise his arms out of the scrap encasing him, but couldn't get his legs to free themselves. "Uh... Vera? why can't I move my legs?"
Vera's voice dripped with sarcasm as she replied, "Oh, I don't know. Maybe it has something to do with the RUBBLE from the WALLS YOU JUST SHOT YOURSELF THROUGH. Or maybe the EXPLOSION YOU JUST TOOK TO THE FACE AT POINT BLANK RANGE has something to do with it!"
Omega, taken aback, said "How was I supposed to know that was a bomb?"
Vera sighed. "You're right. I'm sorry. I forgot you're still learning this stuff."
"thanks. Now about my legs..."
"I've rerouted the power from your servos to activate the emergency lockdown plates and protect you from the blast."
"Lockdown plates?"
"Lockdown plates are retractable heavy armor plates that cover weak points in the armor in emergencies."
"So why aren't they just welded over weak points?"
"The Lockdown plates restrict movement and force you to rely on an external camera for vision. they also cut all comms and disable external audio feeds. Finally, they cover your armor's heat sinks and air filters. Hold on a second... I'll retract them for you..."
Omega's view of the outside world abruptly went black, then two panels slowly slid sideways out of his field of vision, enabling him to see again. He heard Vera say,"rerouting power to servos now..." And Omega's left knee erupted from the rubble pile, followed shortly by the right knee. His servos whined louder as he slowly got to his feet, debris from the rubble pile sliding off his armor.
He approached the hole in the wall, trying to see where he had started. As he concentrated, his vision zoomed in on the doorway he had blasted, and he could clearly see a smoking door frame surrounded by a ring of ash. "Whoa... did I do that?"
Vera again went to sarcasm. "Noooo, the magical exploding monkey-rat did. OF COURSE YOU DID THAT! Good job, too. You know, besides the whole 'blow yourself up and see how many walls I can knock down on my way out' thing. and you did all that just to open a locked door. Congratulations!"
"Right then," Omega said as clambered out of the hole and stared down the dirt roadway in front of the building, "On to the second task. Where do i get transportation?"
More sarcasm from Vera. "I don't know, why don't you ask someone?"
"Like who?"
"Pick one. Preferably not in the act of losing bowel control."
Omega hadn't noticed the small crowd of people gathered around him before.
